Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TllAT Division of the M. of V.T. which is concerned with the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles is certainly pulling its weight. The lectures and practical shows which it has already given throughout the ctuntry, and which were arranged in conjunction with the British Oxygen Co„ Ltd., have proved valuable and successful. Naturally, the numbers present on each occasion had to be limited so that all could obtain a good view, and there was little opportunity of giving attention to individual problems. Deapite .this, however, much good work was done, and certain outstanding problems were tackled, as, for instance, the welding of zinc-base alloy castings. Numbers of these had been scrapped because welding was not considered possible, but it was proved that this work could be undertaken' quite successfully. It was found also that certain selector forks of bronze alloy were not being renovated, and operators were shown how these could

be welded. One carburetter manufac

turer claimed that it was not possible to weld its defective castings, but it was shown that this could be achieved quite successfully.

Another example occurred in connection with passenger vehicles. A large operator had considered that where the top leaf of a spring broke, renewal was the only cure, whereas others found a repair by welding to be quite satisfactory. Taken as a whole, the standard of bus maintenance, which had fallen rather low, has been steadily improving.

However, to carry the educational scheme still farther, the lginistry is putting into service a number of demonstration vans well equipped with oxy-acetylene welding plant, metalspraying apparatus, air compressor, small lathe, an Austin Seven engine, blow pipes, hand tools, and examples of motor-vehicle parts which have been reconditioned by various methods.

Three of these vehicles, which are Austin 3-ton chassis with Luton-type boxvan bodies are ready, and one pro

ceeded last Monday to Nottingham. More will follow, and will go to those areas where they are likely to be of most value. Each vehicle will be attached to the headquarters of a Regional Transport Commissioner, and applications for demonstrations should be made to the Regional Maintenance Officers concerned.

The vehicles Will call direct upon operators and repairers, and the welltrained engineer attached to each vehicle will make contact with the maintenance engineers and, through them, the working foremen, and assist in elucidating any problems which arise. They will show how many types Of worn partscan successfully be built up or otherwise renovated, and will demonstrate the best methods of making use of the equipment available. . It is also hoped that the men in Charge of these vehicles will be able to add to their own knowledge as they visit the various works, and thus be able to pass on to others valuable information which will help to avoid usablle, parts being scrapped. Where maintenance engineers have not the facilities to make certain repairs, the " visitors " will be able to advise as to the nearest points where they can obtain assistance.
