We reproeluce on this page a picture of a Morris-Commercial forward-control lorry, which has an aluminium-alloy body, weighing just over 4 cwt. It is said that the weight of a similar body constructed in timber is just over 8 cwt. With the use of this alloy, the drop sides, which were originally of wood with a central support, are now made in one piece.

For the highly stressed members, such as the underframing and the sections used for the combined vertical stiffeners and hinges on the drop sides and end, Hiduminium RR 56 alloy is used. All sheeting, including the floor, is of hard-rolled RR 66, whilst special oiled sections are fitted around the top edge of all vertical members and along the bottom of the drop sides and end.

RR 66 was chosen for these parts because it does not need protection to withstand atmospheric conditions. The outside, including the underframing, is painted in aluminium.

Popular Types of Fire-fighter.

Although the new extension to the fire-engine departments of Leyland Motors, Ltd., was included in the production line for only four months in the year ended September, 1936, statistics show a 12-per-cent. increase in the number of fire-fighting machines supplied by the company over the previous year's output. The company is now producing, in increasing quantities, the limousine-type fire-engine with transverse seating for the crew. The latest figures show a tendency for fire brigades' to rely on the lighter type of machine, the most popular Leyland model being that equipped with a 500-700-g.p.m. pump.

" Halt " Sign: Important Submissions.

When a Goole lorry driver was summoned at Doncaster, on Monday, for failing to halt at a " Halt, major road ahead " sign, Mr. VV. L. Crawford, defending, made four submissions, as a result of which the Bench adjourned the case for a week.

Mr. Crawford argued that, in the first place, the prosecution had not proved that this was a lawful sign; in the second place, it had not proved the position of the sign, and, in particular, that it was more than 30 yards from the main road; in the third place, that it was not a sign in accordance with directions issued, in that it was not placed in such a position that the driver was able to pull up before reaching the major road; and, lastly, that the purpose of the sign was not the regulation of traffic,. but a warning sign for traffic, The chief constable contended that the sign was in accordance with the regulations, and had been approved by the Ministry of Transport.
