Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

There are many industrial undertakings and trading establishments nowadays which, although it is now fully recognized that the use of motor vehicles is absolutely essential for the speedy dispatch and safe delivery of manufactured goods and merchandise generally, do not employ their own machines for so doing.

The idea of being able to call upon one or more machines according to the immediate state of business requirements, and, at the same time, to be immune from maintaining the machines in running order, will commend itself to many prospective users. There is much to be said in favour of the system. Some interesting particulars in this direction are forthcoming from the

Dispatch Motor td., 114-118, Southwark Bridge Co.,Road, S.E. The concern owns a fleet of 20 Girling pareelears, the machines being employed by a number of business establishments in and around London ; they are each run on the maintenance system, the owner taking all responsibility of upkeep, risk, etc., in connection with their running.

Six of the machines are in continuous use under contract with the Metropolitan Railway Co., Ltd., a careful record of the daily mileage and 'number of calls of each machine being kept; the average calls, as a rule, amount to 100 each day, whilst the distance covered averages 67 miles for the same period. The majority of the fleet, consisting of 'air-es oled motors, has been running on the maintenance plan for upwards of 11 maraths and, we are informed, these vehicles run in every way satisfactorily beth in respect to traffic, hills and .long-distance work.

Machines fitted with watercooled engkies )weee pie:cloased in May last, the results, we are further informed, being, on the whole, quite up to expectations. Records are also kept with regard to petrol consumption, and not withstanding that. the character of the work involves many stops for delivery and also that, results are greatly marred by London traffic, a total of 31 miles to the gslban is usually attained. The mangeGi-ofit also expresses its appreciation Of the detachable wheels with which the vehicles are fitted.

It is interesting to note that, at the last Whit-Monday Parade of over 400 commercial vehicles, a Girlin.g motor supplied on the maintenance plan to the Metaopolitan Railway Co., Ltd., received second prize in its class, which shows the satisfactory upkeep of the machines under this system.
