• The Department of Transport has revealed that almost £2 million available for freight facilities grants will not be taken up for the financial year 1996/7, despite the Government's enthusiasm for rail freight. The budget for the current year is £5,423,000 but the DOT estimates only £3,604,700 will be spent. A spokeswoman for the DOT says a recent review of the grants system revealed there had been delays in processing applications. Some companies have to wait about six months to get a grant, says the spokeswoman. "As part of the review we looked at measures to streamline the process of decision making and the criteria for application."
