Death of former Atkinson chairman

We record with regret the deaths of W. G. Allen, Arthur Richard Wileman and James Watson Woolliscroft

Mr Allen, 77, was a London businessman who in 1933 bought Atkinson Lorries as a struggling Preston company and remained its chairman for 33 years. In 1948 a holding company was formed which acquired or set up subsidiary companies in the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. For a number of years and to the time ol his death. Mr Allen was chairman of the British Transport Vehicle Manufacturers' Association. Mr Anthony W, Allen, one of his two sons, is the present chairman of Atkinson Lorries 0-loidings) Ltd.

Mr Wileman, 72, started in haulage business at Stoney Stanton, Leics, with a horse and dray when he was demobilized from the Army in 1918, and retired three years ago. Mr Woolliscroft, 62, was managing director of J. H. Woolliscroft and Son Ltd—operator of the Silver Service bus services in the Matlock and Bakewell areas of Derbyshire —a business founded by his late father nearly 50 years ago. Mr Woolliscroft was a former East Midlands area chairman of the Passenger Vehicle Operators Association. He was a member of Derbyshire county council and Matlock urban council.

We also record with regret the deaths of Harry Briggs, Cecil Frederick Ward and George Butler in a car accident last Friday. Mr Briggs had been transport manager of the Grimsby Fish Merchants Association for the past four years; Mr Ward was his assistant Mr Butler was contracts manager for British Road Services Ltd in Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire.
