rONSTRUCTED with the needs of the
public utility services principally in mind, but equally appropriate for employment by many ancillary users, the new Commer Air-Van provides practically normal load accommodation plus availability of a two-tool compressor.
This unit may fill the role of a powered mobile workshop, taking advantage of the versatile range of pneumatic tools now available, or it may carry crew and materials on shortor long-distance repair work with the compressor always ready for action.
The vehicle employed is the Commer 2-ton Walk-Thru model which is fitted with the Broomwade WR.100 compressor of 100 cu.-ft./min. capacity. In relation to its size the output of this model is high, but even at maximum level only about half of the available engine b.h.p. is required, so that it should be possible to run continuously under all conditions in hot or cold climates without strain. Because of the ingenious method of installation for the compressor the normal space available for the payload is practically unimpaired, whilst the general accessibility of the various mechanical components is retained.
As will be seen from the accompanying illustrations, the Broomwade WR.100 is located partially below floor level at the front of the van, the hatch protruding approximately 6 in. from the platform. Cocks for the attachment of the power lines are situated at the left side of the rear step.
The Air-Van is built by Davenport Vernon and Co. Ltd., High Wycombe, Bucks, and orders are already in hand from the Bristol Water Board for eight of these vehicles. In order to meet the specialized requirements of customers many optional modifications and extras are available. They include high top roof extension, clear roof panel, a.c. alternator, pneumatic tools, hydraulic winch, roller rear shutter, passenger seats,. heaters and heavy-duty suspension.
