AN appeal by the Tees-side Railless Traction Board against the Northern Traffic Commissioners' refusal to grant them a stage service between Eston and Middlesbrough has been dismissed by the Minister of Transport. The Board's appeal against the grant of a stage service between Stockton and Saltburn to United Automobile Services, Ltd., has also failed. In his decision issued on Tuesday the Minister agrees with the Commissioners and with Mr. J. M. Glen, the inspector who heard the appeals, that as there were too many buses on routes between Middlesbrough Road East and Middlesbrough, it was more desirable to divert an existing service than to license a new one. The development of Teesville Estate at the time of the hearing did not justify the additional service sought by the Board. The diversion of the U.A.S. service was the preferable way to provide direct facilities to Middlesbrough from the northern part of Normanby Road. The Minister has not adopted Mr. Glen's recommendation that the Board should not pay the full costs of the inquiry.
