I SEE YOU have been grasping the nettle of semi-trailer maintenance ( CM 23 May): some member states could or would then insist on it being always with the vehicle "to prove ownership" (it doesn't really prove ownership).
Remember that British tractor units swap semi-trailers far more than our mainland opposite numbers.
So where to now? The registration of semi-trailer owners, if not too bureaucratic, may assist, but I am unclear what sanction would be available to Vosa in the event of trailer owners under-performing. Are the major trailer fleet owners really under-performing? I doubt it.
We should not overlook the many unaccompanied semi-trailers that regularly arrive at our maritime frontiers. Are these causing problems? Does Vosa record foreign-operated semitrailers separately from British?
