Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Volvo has released the first details of its next generation of low-emission diesel engines, including the long-awaited introduction of Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) on its heavy truck models.

The revised engines, which have been designed with the October 1993 exhaust emission regulations in mind, will be introduced this September — all versions will be available by mid1992.

The main changes include the first application of charge-cooling to the less powerful six-litre engines, and the use of EDC on the 10, 12 and 16-litre engines.

The first models to be available will be the six, seven and 16-litre engines used in the FL6, FL7 and F16, with the 10 and 12-litre engines from the FL10, F10 and F12 to follow.

In each case the low-emission engine will supersede the existing variant, except for the sixlitre version which will be offered as an option.

Fuel consumption is said to be unaffected and power outputs go up, notably on the F12 400 and the F16, which is to be boosted to 370kW (503hp) at 1,90Orpm.

0 Seddon Atkinson is conducting trials with the Cummins Super E 14-litre 410 engine and it could be offered as an alternative to the Perkins Tx Eagle 400 12-litre engine which Commercial Motor understands will soon be offered in the Strato tractive unit.

The availability of 14 and 12litre engines in the 298kW (400hp) market would give the Oldham-based truck builder extra coverage in the premium tractor market.
