understands that the problem in the trucking industry today is overcapacity. You don't have any problem growing. If you want to grow just cut your rates, you'll get all the business you want.

This statement could come from any sector of the UK haulage industry and it would ring true. In fact the speaker was Ian Copley, president of US operation Ploof Truck Lines.

He was speaking to American magazine Transport Topics, which also echoes UK trends by reporting that US trucking companies "are going out of business at a record pace" — 601 have failed in the first quarter of 1991, an incredible six a day.
