Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Operators who specify the 224kW-plus Gardner 6LYT engine in their new ERF, Foden or Seddon Atkinson are in for a shock when they receive their next quotations.

The price of the 15.5 litre LYT — Gardner's first allmetric engine, introduced in 1984 — has been hiked by 20%. This follows a price increase of about 10% earlier this year.

All three of the truck manufacturers who fit the LYT say they will have to pass on the full engine price increase to their customers.

Demand for the LYT is likely to decline when it costs £23,000 more than comparable engines from Cummins and Perkins (Shrewsbury) — formerly Rolls Royce. Some operators are already concerned that in such a case Perkins, which bought Gardner from Hawker Siddeley last year, might cease LYT production.

There are also fears for the future of the Patricroft, Manchester Gardner factory where the workforce has been cut from about 1,000 in 1984 to just over 400.

The Gardner factory produced 364 truck engines and 946 bus and coach engines last year.

A Perkins spokesman says it is not company policy to comment on the size of price increases, "but we believe the LYT price now reflects its higher quality".
