Homespeed loses 'one man'

• Homespeed, the home delivery arm of Pickfords, is to close three of its branches and may make up to 200 of its staff redundant following the decision by major customer Littlewoods to take back its 'one-man' delivery business.
Homespeed will still handle Littlewoods' two-man' hand delivery work which it has held since it was formed in 1985, and will also retain a "national network capability" through six depots, according to Pickford's marketing and developing director Stephen Jordan.
The three Homespeed branches scheduled for closure are at Bradford, Strood and Basingstoke. The Nottingham branch will also be affected, but although will remain open.
While confirming that the job cuts could be as high as 200, Homespeed says it is too early to give a definite figure. It is currently working closely with the trade unions, and says it will make every effort to reemploy redundant staff within other NFC companies.
Littlewoods is expected to use HDS for its one-man delivery work.
