11 IE GOVERNMENT plans to divert the money it has saved by dumping grant schemes for lowcarbon vehicles into the Freight Best Practice programme.

Minister of State for Transport Stephen Ladyman has told the House of Commons that the grant programmes for Low Carbon Car, Low Carbon Bus,Air Quality Retrofit and Enhanced Environmental Vehicles are being abandoned because they do not provide value for money.

Instead, Ladyman promised MPs: "I will provide additional funding for the Freight Best Practice programme, including the safe and fuel-efficient driving (SAFED) scheme for van drivers.

'This will train another 40 drivers in fuel-efficient driving and techniques, provide for another 400 fuel-efficiency reviews and increase dissemination of advice in the van sector similar to that available to truckers.

But the UK road transport sector remains lukewarm to the notion of best practice.

In the aggregates sector, for example, 50 SAFED instructor posts have yet to be filled. And only 100 `site-specific reviews' have been booked, out of the 400 that were made available in 2005. These are third-party audits designed to help operators boost efficiency.

• Freight Best Practice has published two case studies into fuel efficiency.

One indicates that fuel savings of up to 15% can he achieved with aerodynamic body equipment; the other shows that careful wheel alignment on Kidds Transport artics cut fuel bills by up to 18.6%.
