• The £2,000 fine tor hauliers caught with illegal immigrants on board can now be imposed on hauliers entering any UK port.
Between 3 April and 3 July the fines system was only in operation at Dover but the Home Office is stepping up the pressure on unscrupulous and innocent hauliers alike by extending the system nationwide.
It has also ordered mobile scanning equipment, which is due to be in place in British ports by November. Two X-ray
units are being manufactured by an American company and two more will come from Germany. P French police say they have broken up a Chinese human trafficking operation following a raid on two foreign exchange offices in Paris.
Laundered money was being used to finance the trafficking of illegal immigrants into Europe. Nine alleged gang leaders were remanded in jail, while a further 18 people were detained for questioning.
