• Foden take the lead in the power race when it offers the 14.6-litre Caterpillar 3406E in the New 4000 range. Caterpillar launched the top-rated 550hp (410kW) variant at the ITS truck show in Las Vegas (see report, pages 12-13).

The electronically controlled in-line six offers 10 power outputs from 310hp; top torque rating is 1,8501bft (2,509Nm) at 1,200rpm, With the Cummins Mll also available in the New 4000, Foden is unlikely to adopt the 3406E below 410hp.

The 550's availability is likely to be governed by transmissions able to handle it. As yet Foden has not yet set a launch date for the big Cat, or the electronically controlled 10.6 litre 317613.
