Despite a peak of sales three years ago Renault's fleet tractor ofiering, the Premium. has consistently tailed to fulfil its true potential. At its launch the Premium appeared to set the Beet standard with an excellent driver-friendly cab combining with a very lightweight chassis, presenting operators and drivers with a good working environment. Though now improving, poor brand perception has held the model back.
Power in tractors comes from 11-litre engine, which has been squeezed to now offer a top rating of 412hp —Renault calls it a 420 —though the driving character is such that it feels more like a 380. Planned new engines for the Euro-4 emissions deadline in 2006 should address the performance issues. Premium is now offered with ZF's transmission line-up, including the AS-Tronic, though software is poor compared with competitors using the same gearbox.
