A HANDBRAKE mechanism designed rA to occupy the minimum possible space is shown in patent No. 853,933 (Daimler-Benz AG., Stuttgart-Unterttirkheitri, Germany).
The drawing shows one of two methods disclosed. In this case, the cable (1) from 1346 the handbrake lever and ratchet runs around a segment-type pulley (2) and is fixed to the end (3). The pulley spindle carries a small pinion (4) engaged with rack teeth on a sliding bar (5). The cable (6) to the brake-operating mechanism ends in a threaded rod (7) which goes through the slider and is located by a wing-nut by which adjustment is made. The pinion has one thick tooth which contacts the rack and acts as a stop.
The second scheme shown utilizes roller-chain with a special sprocket instead of a rack and pinion.
