HE volume of both goods and pas 1 senger road transport on the Continent and between the United Kingdom and the Continent increased steadily between 1950 and 1959. This is reported in the latest issue of the Annual Bulletin of Transport Statistics for Europe, pubfication of which was announced this week by the Economic Commission for Europe. The bulletin can be obtained from H.M. Stationery Office, price 10s. 6d.
The bulletin points out that the volume of international goods traffic rose much faster than that of national goods traffic. In West Germany, for example, the tonnage annually crossing the frontier by road showed a tenfold increase.
The volume of rail goods traffic roc at a much smaller rate. The share of road transport in total movement o! traffic is proportionately the largest in Italy and the United Kingdom. The number of road vehicles of all categories greatly increased, the rate of increase being distinctly more rapid than that of general economic growth.
