DEATH OF PROMINENT A.R.O. OFFICIAL.

We regret to announce the death, at St. Austell, Cornwall, last Sunday, ot Mr. Humphrey Cooke, a figure wellknown in motor-trade circles in Devon and Cornwall. Mr. Cooke was one of the solicitors for the Devon and Cornwall Area of A.R.O. and honorary secretary of the Mid-Cornwall Sub-area ot that organization. He had been closely identified with the building up of A.R.O: in the West Country.

B.R.F. Protest on Railway Advertisement.

The British Road Federation states that the railway companies' advertisement "Snowed lip" casts a reflection on the efficiency of road-transport services, and this might have caused serious and needless loss of trade to that industry during the recent cold

spell. In general, road transport was functioning with normal efficiency, and could cope with the seasonal demands, both as to goods and passengers, in a manner that compared favourably with any other form of transport.

Lorry Procession as "Square Deal" Counterblast.

In reply to the railway companies' "square deal" campaign, a mass demonstration, in which there will be a procession of lorries is to be held at Chesterfield to-morrow, January 7. The demonstration is being held under the auspices of the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O., but non-member operators are also being invited to take part.

A further propaganda effort, at Chesterfield, is a mass meeting to be held next Wednesday, January 11, in St. James's Hall, Vicar Lane, at 7.30 p.m. Speakers will be Mr. J. J. Gran:tar, chairman of the Yorkshire Area of A.R.O., Mr. F. G. Bibbings, licensing and. propaganda officer for the Area, and Mr. J. L. Kinder, of A.R.O. headquarters.

B.R.F.'s Bigger and Better H.Q.

The British Road Federation has now doubled its accommodation at 120, Pall Mall. This move Was demanded by greatly increased activities of the Federation and serves to emphasize the fact that the problem of the roads and of road transport in relation 'to the community will be of increasing importance during the present year. A DORSET AND WEST HANTS SUB-AREA FOR A.R.O.

At a meeting held recently between the Dorset and West Hants Sub-area of A.R.O. and the new Bournemouth Sub-area it was unanimously decided to amalgamate the two sub-areas under the title of the Dorset and West Hants Sub-area. Mr. Edmonds, formerly secretary of the Bournemouth Sub-area, was appointed secretary.

Yet Another for B.R.F. Fold.

Membership of the B.R.F. his been increased to 59 organizations by the election to associate membership of the National Employers' Association of Vehicle Builders,

Unity for Irish Operators.

At a meeting of the Executive of the National Private Lorry Owners Protective Association in Tralee, last week, the general secretary (Mr. D. Maloney) reported that he had completed the circularizing of private lorry owners in all counties in Eire and had received a satisfactory response. Steps were being taken, therefore, to set up county organizations which would be affiliated with the National Executive.

Arrangements were also to be made for the holding of a convention of delegates from county organizations.

The Association has agreed to proposals which it intends to submit to the newly appointed Transport Inquiry Tribunal.
