are to be axed following the Ministry of Defence's decision to contract out part of its distribution and warehousing operation. The Navy, Army and Air Force Institutes (NAAFI) is making 2,000 staff redundant at centres in Nottingham, Amesbury in Wiltshire and Kempen in Germany because of major restructuring following huge losses.
The Booker Foodservice group will take on a five-year contract to supply, store and distribute fresh, chilled and frozen foods to armed forces in the UK, Ireland and Germany. The 2400m deal will allow Bookers to create 300 new jobs, many of them for drivers, and open new distribution depots in the south of England, Scotland and Germany. This is due to start in September.
NAAFI was formed in 1921 to provide canteen services to the armed forces. It says it is now going to focus on operating convenience stores, clubs and providing financial services.
