• A Cambridge lorry driver who swallowed a hard-luck story from a Polish student found himself in court charged with facilitating illegal entry.

Ronald Frederick Neal, 58, of Broad Street, Ely was fined £1,000 with £200 costs and 50 hours community services when he admitted the offence at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday. Christopher May, prosecuting, said Neal drove into Dover on 2 August and told immigration officials he was the only one in the lorry.

A search found another man under a quilt on a bunk bed in the driver's cab.

Neal, an LGV driver for more than 25 years, said the student told him he had previously been living in the UK but had been robbed of his passport and papers in France and needed to get back to London where he had a job.

Clive Styles, for Neal, said he acted out of humanitarian reasons and received no payment. he just believed the man's story.

Neal was described as a trust ed employee.
