• The newly announced Food Safety Council is to study the role of transport in food safety.
The council will be chaired by an independent food safety adviser and will report to the minister of agriculture, the health secretary and the secretaries of state for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The transport of food will be studied under the council's food handling remit but the exact areas of exploration will be decided by its members when they are appointed.
The Government is setting up the new body following recent food scares including BSE and the E-coli bacteria problem in Scotland.
