Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE LOSS of 32 jobs and the closure of one of its depots would be the result of a ban on maximum weight lorries for Reckitt and Colman, distribution director Fraser Menzies told the panel.

The vehicles used for trunking goods from the factories are usually 32.5-tonners with 14.5 and 16.5-tonners for distribution.

"A ban at weekends would have no effect on our operations," Mr Menzies said, "but a night time ban would cause disruption." A 16-tonne-weight limit would necessitate the running of two vehicles from the Harlow depot to Coulsdon. A 28tonne lorry with a drawbar trailer is generally used for this run.

Some journeys would increase dramatically if a 7.5tonne-lorry limit were introduced, he stressed. The average number of deliveries per week in the GLC area would rise from 2,652 to 5,876, an increase of over 120 per cent.

"We have also assumed a 20 per cent reduction in travelling speeds following the increase in the number of goods vehicles on the road," Mr Menzies added.
