Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A new standard load unit has just been introduced by National Carriers Ltd. Novel feature is that its height is adjustable to allow full utilization in any trunk haul medium. The unit is a non-collapsible stillage, caged on three sides, the open side being secured in transit by a deep curtain.

Chief benefits claimed are: it will cut down handling time, lower working costs, and reduce claims for damage.

Full dimensions of the stillage are: platform, 44in. (1100mm) square; height, 64in. (1620mm) adjustable to 76in. (1930mm) or 80in. (2030mm); floor clearance, 4in. (100mm) which is compatible with all types of mechanical handling equipment. Maximum load capacity is 1 ton, with a volume limit of 86 Cu. ft.

When fully extended to the 80in. height the unit allows full use to be made of the space available in Freightliner containers: 76in. is the maximum possible in new long wheelbase rail wagons, while the basic height of 64in. will be used in covered road trailers and conventional rail wagons.
