DELIVERY AT THE TAILBOARD CAUSES PROBLEM

TT will be recalled that" a point in the conditions pertaining to the Government Haulage Scheme, which gave rise to much discussion, was the stipulation that delivery should be at the tailboard of the vehicle' . , This question has arisen again in Glasgow where delay in :the unloading of vehicles at the docks is arising because hauliers delivering goods there are made responsible for not only the unloading of goods but for stacking them in a particular fashion in a special part of the shed.

We understand that unless this be

done by the haulier stevedores will not sign for delivery= The result is that the haulier, arriving at the doCks in Glasgow, must waste much time in finding labour to assist in unloading the goods. This seems a matter for immediate action in view of the necessity of a quick turn-round of lorries. If it be established that the attitude of the stevedores is right then provision should be made for labour to be immediately available to assist in unloading 'vehicles at the docks.

IMMOBILIZATION OF TRACTORS NOT NOW REQUIRED .

BY the Motor Vehicles (Control) Order, 1941, made by the Minister of Home Security, tractors are now excluded from the need for immobilization.

Such :'machines must not be constructed to carry any load other than' their equipment, water, fuel, accumulators and loose tools.

JOWETT HAS A GOOD YEAR'S TRADING THE report of Jowett Cars, Ltd., for 1 the year ended September 30, 1941, shows a trading profit of £104,721. This is an increase of £84,585 on the previous year, but £54,267 is allocated to meet taxation, as against only £1,463 12 months ago, and £10,189 expended on A.R.P. is written off. Net profit is £30,047, compared with £8,779.

Payment of three years' arrears of dividend on the 6 per cent. Cumulative Preference shares up to June 30, 1940, absorbs £22,500, leaving £10,721 to be carried forward, as compared with the £3,174 brought in. The bank overdraft has been reduced from £66,164 to £7,567.
