(A Driver's Lament when Parting from his Leyland Machine.)
THAT LIFE should hold such sorrows I Quite fail to see and, yet, I try To think 'tis for the best. But, when these partings come,
I tempted am to wish that some Kind power, known or unknown, Would lift me from this earth to some great home Where partings are no more : . Or, failing that,. to some blank spot Where no affection grows, And hearts, and, such-like rot, Are never spoken of ; nor thought to be Commodities essential.
You wonder, friend, that I should be Disconsolate. I'll tell you I Sh. First came to me a year ago, Filling ray very soul with joy And, day by day, my heart would glow With pride. She was the goods! Not just a toy, And men in wonder gazed on her As we passed by.
Her beauteous form, her graceful lines, Her -whole appearance, with the times Kept pace, and in the shade
c36 t Placed all her sisters, I'm afraid. Small wonder, then, my friend, That I should love her.
And such love, too, so deep and true, My very heart seemed nigh to break When. she was taken from me.
Her humblest slave I'd been, Whilst she had been any queen.
As queen, indeed, I'd served her, And would serve, Would Fate but send her back to me.
But no ! She's gone ! And, going, Took from life that which made it most worth living.
Though others come to take her place, None have her form nor splendid grace,
Nor yet her winning ways.
But prove to be such shrews, All sadly needing taming.
But there, 'tis useless! This regret availeth naught, Nor will it bring her back to me. God knows, I'm sorry. So content will be with this farewell Good-bye, "id lorry I
