Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE IMPACT OF vibrations from uneven roads on drivers' health could result in a raft of compensation claims, according to the author of several studies into the problem.

The warning comes as research into whole-body vibration on timber hauliers in Scotland is due to be published, stating that recorded vibration levels were unacceptably high and could lead to musculoskeletal problems.

Johan Granlund, chief technology officer at Vectura Consulting, said numerous legal cases have been raised in Sweden from drivers affected by such health problems, and he expects UK drivers to make compensation claims as the issue becomes more widely understood.

"Employers are obliged by legislation to minimise vibration," said the vibration expert. "It's not easy to solve the problem, but many things can be done to reduce it. First and foremost are good roads, but the vehicle is also part of this."

However, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) said its research shows drivers' exposure was below levels required for action. A spokesman said: "The HSE is concerned that undue attention can be given to whole-body vibration, when other factors present a higher risk."
