As part of the feedback to CM'S Make Compulsory Breaks Worthwhile

campaign, the Drivers Action Movement campaign group has its say...

JACK CROSSFIELD, secretary of the DAM, writes:

The Drivers Action Movement has tried to highlight the problems of safe overnight parking for LG Vs and their drivers; unfortunately while trade bodies. trade unions, transport agencies and the government waffle on, nothing is done to put the problems right.

You recently listed the worst areas for truck crime (CM 22 November:Vehicle thefts head list of truck crime reports'). Five of these areas are motorway service areas (MS A s) which take money for parking overnight but fail to give any protection to the drivers or vehicles parked on their sites. The government should force MS As to provide protection while vehicles are parked on these sites.

Other dangerous areas are those with no truckstops or MS A s close by, forcing drivers to park in lay-bys.

The only solution to this growing problem is for local authorities. with the support of the business sector and central government, to build a properly designed overnight truck parking place in each and every locality — and when an industrial complex is being built, a truck parking facility should be built alongside it.

The proposed truck parking place we have designed (see diagram, left) could be adjusted to whatever space is available. However, whatever the size of the parking space it must: • Be surrounded by effective lighting and fencing • Have CCTV in place • Segregate hazardous goods and refrigerated vehicles • Have security on site with a proper office and a direct line to the local police station • Include washing facilities • Offer food close by or on site • Have a range of health and safety equipment on site
