Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

One very specialist operator is Euro Fuels and its MD Nick McDermott is concerned about having to make a massive outlay in order to continue to ply his trade in the London low-emission zone (LEZ). Replacing his old J-reg Leyland Oaf 60.180 chassis has set him back £90,000, even though he'd calculated it would serve him another two to three years.

That unforeseen hurdle brought about by the LEZ has blown a hole in his finances and placed a huge burden on him and his small company.

Numerous chassis and equipment engineers were involved with making the necessary changes to his new Daf LF55 220, 18-tonner: Maidment Tanker Services supplied the 12,500-litre fuel tank with Alpeco metering system; while Margatebased Gardner Denver added the ADR delivery equipment, fire-screened the cab and rearranged the chassis fittings.

Astra Vehicle Technology re-routed the exhaust, moving the catalyst element into a new square silencer which it mounted beneath the battery box on the offside of the chassis, along with the urea and fuel tanks.

Gardner Denver added the air-system re' charge plug at the frontan ADR emergency requirement should a tanker have lost its air while under a loading gantry.

The process has taken more than seven months, plus another three weeks for the necessary Vosa appointment to have the conversion examined and certified.

Has it all been worthwhile? "Yes and no," says McDermott. "My new tanker looks superb and drives like a Transit, but my old J-reg sitting in the yard is still compliant so far as the emissions go, and its test certificate confirms this."
