Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE HORRENDOUS kidnapping at gunpoint of a truck driver parked in a lay-by on the A55 at Caerwys two weeks ago makes it clear just how urgently a safe and secure truck park is needed in the area.

I run a haulage business in Oswestry and my drivers use the A55 in North Wales. I know there is nowhere safe to park trucks between Chester and Holyhead, and it is a scandal that in these times of rigorous employment legislation truck drivers are not provided for. Our only option along the A55 is to park up in lay-bys, sleep in our cabs, use the hedgerows as toilets and risk our own safety.

I've been in the business 52 years and have run my own haulage company for 37 years. Conditions for drivers have got worse, not better. There used to be transport cafes and parking every 1010 15 miles along major routes. These have all gone, to be replaced by either developments or large cafe chains who welcome car not truck drivers.

LCIV drivers are the lifeblood of British industry. In the UK the supply chain breaks down very quickly without them, as happened in 2000 when they stopped deliveries during the fuel price protest. We need good quality, secure facilities for truck drivers, including 24/7 staffed barriers. Drivers will have to show their!!) but it means they will be safe once inside.

The application to build a secure truck park at Caerwys, fully compliant with EU security regulations, offers North Wales the opportunity to lead the way in improving the safety and working conditions of lorry drivers.
