• Fatal road accidents involving fins are to be treated as homicides under strong new guidelines produced this week by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

ACP° states that road traffic accident (RTA) investigating officers should use the Read Death Investigation Manual together with the Murder investigation Manual as national criteria. Richard Brunstrom, North Wales Police Chief Constable, says: "Many read deaths should, until proved to the contrary, be treated as homicides. Approximately 3,500 people are killed on roads in the UK every year—this is roughly four times the number of homicide victims."

The report, which has been compiled over the past 24 months with the help of the AA, RAC and the Department of Transport, recommends that all forces train a dedicated senior investigating officer (310) to deal with fatal crashes.
