EXERCISES in mechanical loading on I-4 British Road Services trailers were a feature of a demonstration lastSaturday at the B.R.S. premises, Ferry 'Road, Cardiff, following a parade of 62 special types of vehicle operated by the State undertaking and various ptiblic services, including the South Wales Electricity Board, the Wales Gas Board and the Civil Defence Corps. The parade was organized as a national productivity year event and was preceded by an • introductory speech by Mr. R. R. Jackson, the South Wales Licensing . Authority.

Highlights of • the demonstration included the loading of articulated trailers with two-car and four-car pallets, 10-ton light alloy containers and a flat platform Pallet body hy a Shelvoke and. Drury • Freight] i f ter 15,000-lb. fork-lift truck. Loading of the pallets is aided by pyramid-typi: location pedestals which guide The pallet into position and act as securing lugs. Turnround time was reduced to a few minutes.

Employed under contract to the Brit:sh Cellophane Co., of Bridgwater, for the carriage of special paper to centres on the Continent, a timber type of collapsible pallet was also demonstrated. This has a capacity or 7 tons and nine collapsed pallets can he loaded on one vehicle for the return trip.

Demonstrating the advantages of automatic operation of the rear shutter of an Austin-based El. RS. parcels van, driver

Allred Whitlock claimed that the 'system .afforded a sav:ng of 50 per cent over `the normal time required to operate a manually controlled shutter and remove

a parcel from the van. Electrically operated, the shutter is released when a key is turned in a lock on • the nearside of the vehicle. It is automatically raised to the fully open position. The driver then collects the parcel and presses an adjacent knob which lowers the shutter to the closed position, where it is -autoinat:cally locked. The van is therefore thief proof.
