During the climbs, the exhaust smoke was clean except for a slight haze visible at the tail-pipe just before the change into low gear.:-Low gear was necessary, of course, for the stop-start trial on the 1 in 5 section, but the handbrake held the vehicle with five notches on the ratchet in reserve.

William Urquhart, L0234,0Z7 Garratt Lane, London, S.W.17. When employed as a wheel brace, the "ram's horn" levers are much more convenient to use than the cranked handle of a normal brace.
For easing the wheel on or off the studs, the brace is placed on the ground with the ram's horns beneath the tyre. By placing the foot on the extended portion, the wheel can be raised until • the stud holes register with the studs.
