is always of interest, but particularly so when one meets many old friends, as we did on July. 28: The visitors comprised manufacturers and their representatives, operators of big fleets and technicians in many fields connected with road transport and the railways. By the courtesy of the Firestone concern,-tea was served in its fine athletic club. The work of the Automobile Research DepartTient is divided into two 'main sections—information service and research. The former prepares and circulates abstracts from current technical literature from all countries, the library staff also dealing with tech nical inquiries on specific subjects. The general research programme is decided by a sub-committee, and, as a war-time measure, it has been expanded to include representatives of Government Departments. The present work in this connection concerns the effect of contaminated oil on bearings, involving the microscopical examination of abrasives; the analysis of materials, exhaust gases, fuels and lubricants, including used engine oils; tests of ' the fatigue strengthsof crankshafts, etc.; the effects of the aeration and frothing of lubricants; the durability and wear of bearings and gears; and last, but not least, research into the conversion of oil and petrol engines for use with producer gas.

IT will be a remarkable
accomplishment if the new zoning scheme, put into operation by biscuit manufacturers on June 28 last, effects the saving of 15,000,000 tonmiles per annum, which is calculated it will achieve. The scheme is expected to reduce the amount of transport used for biscuits to less than a quarter of its former total. The new plan is basedpon a'successfuf zoning experiment introduced about a year ago to save transport and man. power, and is expected to effect still greater economies.
