That warnings given by The Commercial Motor of the intention of the authorities to take drastic action against offenders, have not been idle, is evidenced by an announcement in volume 162 of "Applications and Decisions" for the Eastern Area.

The Licensing Authority has suspended for three months (from August 1 to October 31), the B licence (No. 1275) of Mr. M. A. Dickerson, of Cambridge. Further evidence comes from the Metropolitan Area, where the Licensing Authority has suspended a Contract A licence of Mr. H. Hilliard from July 26 to August 22 inclusive.

Early Start on Big Durham Read Schemes.

An early start is to be made with the road-improvement schemes in Durham, which is among the foremost counties in the kingdom in the matter of road-transport facilities.

• No fewer than 21 bridges over railways are to be reconstructed, at an estimated cost of £343,000, of which the Ministry of Transport will pay 75 per cent. These railway bridges have been a long-standing source of complaint by all road users, and their transfer to the Ministry and the county authority is a welcome change.

Death of Dunlop Official.

We regret to record the death of Mr. C. W. Hyde, of the national sales division of the Dunlop Rubber Co., Ltd. For about two years he was dealing with railway companies and large fleet operators in London. He joined the Dunlop organization in 1921 and, after serving in several areas, was, in 1935, transferred to the national sales division in London.

A Digest of Motor Laws.

A handy booklet of interest to road users has lately been issued by the Royal Automobile Club. It bears the title "Motor Laws," and comprises a summary, in simple language, of the various Acts of Parliament and regulations relating to the use of private motor vehicles. Certain of the information is of direcC interest to commercial operators.

To non-members the price of the booklet is 3d., plus lid. postage, and it can be obtained from the headquarters of the Club, Pall Mall, London, S.W.1.

First Buses with New Leyland Bodies.

The 15 buses being built for Lancashire United Transport and Power Co., Ltd., will be the first vehicles to be equipped with the new series TD5 bodies being introduced by Leyland Motors, Ltd. The TD5 body is an improved version of the company's well-known TD4 double-deck all-metal body. The improvements include sha.dowless interior lighting, Simplastic glazing, rubber wings, and better ventilation.

Another new fitting which will be incorporated in the 52-seater bodies for the LAI:T. is a patented rear registration number-plate called the Simslight. During the day this type of plate, which is a combination of tail light and registration plate, shows up as white, and at night as red.

Bodies for Silk Transport.

J. H. Jennings and Son, Ltd., Sandbach,. Cheshire, advises us that it built the bodies of the vehicles that are in use by G. H. Heath and Co., Ltd., a concern of silk throwsters, of Macclesfield, whose road-transport activities we described last Friday.
