Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A Mercedes launch is always an event, but with the revamped Sprinter we get the feeling that the company has produced something special.

Before we were allowed to get behind the wheel of the new Sprinter, Mercedes showed us a static display so could walk round and admire its form (a mostly successful update). Then we were allowed to try it on the company's test track in Stuttgart and put the next-generation traction control through its paces.

We've now been able to give it the once-over on the road— and we understand why M-B was keen to have a build-up. The latest Sprinter raises the light CV bar to the point where you start to fear for the competition.

Put simply.every element that makes up a van has been scrutinised, assessed, modified and developed — twice over. Explaining the ins and outs would take a long time; we know this because we sat through just such a lecture at the launch.

And with approximately 1,000 versions available, we won't bore you with that list either; suffice to say there are four lengths, three roof heights and GVW ratings from 3.0 to 5.0 tonnes to choose from.

The four-cylinder turbo-diesel units offer four power outputs, ranging from 88 to 150hp, while the V6 delivers a strong 184hp. To match all that power, the Sprinter has more safety features, both passive and active, than any other vehicle in its class.

Inside. there's a revised driving position that is set further back for a more relaxed, car-like setup. Instrumentation has been modernised, though we now have the cluttered single stalk that Mercedes favours on its road cars. A recessed dashboard gives considerably more room on the passenger side.

On the road, there's a notable improvement in refinement. Engine noise is consigned to the background, except for the gritty V6, which pulls with plenty of verve; and the Sprinter sticks to the road in a way that instils confidence, even in the bigger versions. The suspension produces a relaxing ride without compromising control and in the corners it feels neutral.

While the steering is precise, it feels a touch too light at speed where it ought to firm up. requiring constant correction. But to be fair this is a minor blemish in an impressive package.

Visibility is enhanced by the cleverly designed A-pillar that cuts into the side window. enabling more precise manoeuvring in tight situations. And it's that attention to detail that highlights just how well this van has been thought through. •
