After a brief period of calm, attacks are again being reported on a Northamptonshire industrial estate. Bridget Carter reports.
POLICE FEAR THAT a spate of attacks on drivers parked up on the Brackmills industrial estate in Northamptonshire herald a return to levels of crime not seen there for several years.
The industrial estate was a truck-crime black spot until the problems were alleviated by police moves including vouchers offering reduced rates on secure parking at a nearby truckstop.
But now the thieves are hack. Last week a Polish truck driver was attacked and robbed just outside the estate after he had parked up for the night.
The attackers smashed the window of the victim's cab as he slept, parked on a quiet street not far from the estate's entrance, on 24 March.
Detective Sergeant Mark Hooper of Truckpol says one offender held the victim down as another drove the vehicle. The driver was then transferred into another vehicle and dumped in a lay-by on the A58 East Lanes Road in Leigh. Lancs, where he raised the alarm.
The offenders escaped with the victim's truck, which was loaded with televisions and DVDs. Hooper reports: "We've been having these problems for years. Eastern European drivers miss their time slot and are told to wait on the street so that they aren't the company's liability." The stolen tractor unit (reg W0RV387) is white with a livery of a cow on the side; the trailer is silver. If anyone has information about the vehicle they should contact Truckpol on 07000 878 257.
