POLICE ARE HOLDING talks with bosses at Europe's largest distribution park in an attempt to improve overnight safety for drivers.

There has been a spate of raids on trucks parked overnight in lay-bys in Leicestershire in one recent attack, a driver was kidnapped.

Police are trying to persuade Gazeley, the owners of the Magna Park site, at Lutterworth, Leics, to set aside a secure overnight parking area where drivers can sleep in safety.

The worst spot for raids in the county is the AS near Hinckley. Paul Smith, a director of locally based Smithson Haulage, says his drivers are becoming increasingly nervous about overnighting: -There is a need for more secure parks in the area.he adds.

A police spokesman says:We'd prefer drivers to be in lorry parks and not in roadside lay-bys where they have no protection. We're in discussion with Magna Park to see if we can get one set up there.

"This isn't a formal request, but part of discussions. At the end of the day Magna Park is a business and would want to see a commercial benefit from doing this."

Magna Park's manager, Roy Davies, says the firm is already paying for signs in local lay-bys warning drivers to stay alert. "We've never seen the need for lorries to park here overnight," he adds. "Rut if the police come to us with particular concerns we're open to discussion."
