• Tower Bridge is in danger of being worn out because heavy lorries are flouting its 17-tonne weight limit.
City of London engineers are asking the Department of Transport for tougher policing of bridge users in order to solve the problem—local pressure group the Docklands Forum is lobbying for lorry size to be cut to 7.5 tonnes by introducing a 7ft width restriction.
"If current weight restrictions were observed the bridge would last for centuries," says a City of London spokesman. "But lorry drivers flout the regulations in significant numbers,"
