Transport Officials and Leading Operators Witness Demonstration of BrushKoela Producer-gas Plant

IIA AN Y transport notabilities were J.V.Lincluded in a gathering on Tuesday last of which the centre of interest was a Brush-Koela producer-gas plant installed" on a Dodge 3-ton lorry. This machine was being demonstrated at the premises of E. W. Rudd, Ltd., Stratford, London.

In co-operation with this company, the demonstration was organized by Red Circle Garage, Ltd., Eastern Arm, Great Cambridge Road, Tottenham, agent for the Brush Electrical Engineering Co., Ltd., for which purpose it was loaned by its operator, R. F. Peachey and Sons, Ltd., 5-11. Theobalds Road, London, W.C.1.

Some 35 persons were present, including Mr. Gordon Robinson, district transport officer; Mr. Gilmour, sub-district transport officer; Mr. Beere, transport officer, and Mr. Giles, managing director, and Mr. James, transport manager, E. W. Rudd, Ltd. Also present were Messrs. Arnold (Thomas Tilling, Ltd.), Brigg (B.I. Transport Co., Ltd.), Fairclough (T. M. Fairclough and Sons, Ltd.), Feast (Thomas Feast), Gann (Jessups (Stratford), Ltd.), Glover (R. J. Weeks), Heathcote (Spencer Chapman and Messel, Ltd.), Hors. (Leyland Motors, Ltd), Mills (Jessups (Stratford), Ltd.): Palmer (Merton Bone Co., Ltd.), Pepper (Pickfords, Ltd.), Perkins (Co-operative Wholesale Society, Ltd.), Rees (G.W. Transport Co.), Tapp (Pickfords, Ltd.), Thompson (Thompson Brothers, engineers), Twist (George Hatch, Ltd.), Vivian (Franki Compressed Pile Co., Ltd.) and Weeks (R. J. Weeks).

Mr. S. Peachey addressed the company and outlined the functioning of the apparatus, explaining something of its economics and the maintenance operations required for efficient performance. An outstanding feature of the Koch producer is that it is of a design which uses both the up-draught and cross-draught systems, combining the advantages of both.. .

We understand that the only moclifi cation made to the Dodge engine was to raise the compression ratio to 6.8 to I. As for the capabilities of the vehicle we were informed that it would comfortably take a 4-ton load up Muswell Hill, in first gear.

" Motor Coalite " is the fuel used and on 100 lb.—the contents of the hopper-100 miles running is claimed. The price of this preparation is £4 10s, per ton, and arrangements for ensuring supplies ofit-in all parts of the country are, it was stated, well advanced. The cost of the plant is £95, whilst £30 is the approximate sum charged for effecting the conversion.

A description of the Brush-Kocla plant was contained in our issue dated January 13. It is of the wet type, water being introduced into the air intake which is jacketed by the gas outlet. This promotes thermal efficiency, as heat from the gas is imparted not only to the water, causing it to vaporize, but also to the air.

The cross-draught system is used for starting, because it affords quicker generation of gas. Normal running is on the up-draught principle which gives a lower resistance to air flow and minimizes clinker formation.
