THE SCHOOL of Automotive Studies at Cranfield Institute of Technology has appointed Dr Martyn Cordey-Hayes to a new chair in Transport Assessment.

During the past eight years Cranfield has been active in developing techniques which enable the economic, social and environmental aspect s of methods of transport to be assessed in conjunction with engineering methods of design.

The Centre for Transport Studies, whose work Dr Cordey-Hayes is to lead, contains the major part of the Institute's expertise in this field. It comprises a multidisciplined team of applied scientists, engineers, planners, economists and psychologists.

Moving to the freight side of the business we regret to record the death of Mr Barry Wild, 49, general manager of the tank division of Sutton of St Helens Ltd.

Mr Wild, who collapsed and died in a motorway telephone box last week, had previously been with Harold Wood and Son Ltd and was transport manager at Wincanton Transport Ltd until the end of 1974.

Mr Albert Hirst a former director of the Hanson Transport Group of companies has died in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Mr Hirst, aged 66, of Longley Road, Almodbury, Huddersfield, joined Hansons in 1932. He retired last year after more than 40 years as finance director.

On a happier note Pickfords Removals and Travel Service. have appointed Mr J. Willis, 27, as manager of their Bishop's Stortford branch following the retirement of Mr J. Avery. Mr Willis was formerly manager of the Deptford branch.

A marketing appointment this week is that of Mr Ralph Tomlinson, who becomes the Truck Marketing Manager of Giltspur Motor Industries Ltd. He will be based at Kay Mackworth Ltd's Truck Centre outside Derby.

He will be responsible in his new post for analysing, planning and supervising the marketing activities of the Giltspur Truck Division as a whole. In the passenger field, Mr F. Bloom, formerly sales manager of Plaxtons (Scarborough) Ltd, has joined the Bus and Coach Division of Kirby Central Ltd, Sheffield, as Contract Sales Executive.

Mr W. Wells has been appointed Bus and Coach Division Sales Executive in Scotland.

We also record With regret the death of Mr Richard Cropley, 68, of Boston, who was in business for 45 years as a coach operator in South Lincolnshire.

On the manufacturing front there have been a number of changes, the foremost of which is the appointment of the Hon Gerald Lascelles, HIVE, as President of the Institute of the Motor Industry. Lord Rootes has been forced to resign the presidency because of ill health.

The appointment assumes particular importance since the Institute is being reconstituted ready for the time when IMI qualifications could become mandatory for the management staff in the motor industry.

A new appointment to the board of ERF (Holdings) Ltd is that of Mr C. Acton, C.Eng, who has worked continuously for the group since 1943. He will remain as managing director of ERF Fire Engineering Ltd at Winsford and will also keep his position as managing director of ERF Plastics Ltd at Biddulph.

Chrysler UK have announced that Mr Gordon Kennedy has been elected to their board. MT Kennedy, 51, is director of the company's supply and quality division.

Colonel H. M. Smith has left the Vehicle Engineering Division of the DoE where he handled the engineering aspects of the homologation legislation and type approval.

He is now practising as an engineering consultant and has been retained by the Motor Industry Research Association.

Finally the London sales office of Ailsa Bus Ltd, previously at 1 Great Cumberland Place, Marble Arch, London, has been relocated at Ailsa Trucks, 47, Sewardstone Road, Chingford E4.
