ENGINEERING EXHIBITION

AFTER an interval of 10 years, the Engineering and Marine Exhibition %%as opened at Olympia, London, on Thursday, August 28. The Exhibition, opened by the Home Secretary, the Rt. Hon. Chuter Ede, is presided over by Lt.-Col. Lord Dudley Gordon, D.S.O., whose name is familiar throughout all branches of the engineering industry

Incorporating the Foundry Trades' Exhibition and the Welding Exhibition, it occupies the whole of the Grand and National Halls of Olympia, including the galleries. This is an increase of 50 per cent. over its largest pre-war size.

There are many stands which are of great interest i,nd benefit to the vehicle operator and manufacturer. The majo.rity of these is to be found in the two galleries, but some which will be popular with manufacturers are to be found on the ground floor.

The Commercial Motor is displayed by Temple Press Ltd. on Stand 9 in the National Hall.

An injector nozzle to be used with the Ricardo head is shown on Stand 8, Grand Hall, by C.A.V., Ltd.. Worple Way, Acton. The nozzle, known as the Pin taux, has an auxiliary drilling which injects fuel into the centre of the precombustion chamber at low engine speeds. This facilitates starting from cold without using heater plugs. A fuel pump and injector in section are also shown on this stand, together with the new C.A.V. G7 high-speed lightweight dynamos.

A large variety of engine oil filters and cleaners is exhibited by Tecalemit, Ltd., Great West Road, Brentford on Stand I, Row B, of the Grand Hall, Various lubrication systems are also shown on this stand.

Laminated synthetic resin-bonded sheets, rods end mouldings of special shapes are shown by Tufnol, Ltd., Perry Barr, Birmingham. This material combines lightness of weight, insulation, and good mechanical strength, finding many uses in chassis and bodywork of commercial vehicles.

Dobbie McInnes, Ltd., 57, Bothwell Street, Glasgow, is exhibiting the Earnboro Indicator, which is used in most engine experimental departments. The Recording Accelerometer, which was not

on view during the earlier part of the Show, made its first appearance on the Dobbie McInnes stand in the Grand Hall during the second week.

Lubricating oil filters for use on engines from 50 to 5,000 b.h.p. are exhibited by Stream-Line Filters, Ltd., Ingate Place, London, on Stand 9 in the Grand Hall. Filters, for use in workshops or garages to filter bulk quantities of oil, are also shown.

The War Office has featured a fullsized Bailey Bridge on the Army Stand; this most impressive exhibit is seen immediately on entering the Exhibition. A REALE. airborne workshop trailer shown on this stand demonstrates how essential maintenance equipment may be assembled in a small space. Carried on this trailer are a lathe, grinder, drill, and vices.

Demonstrations of protective coatings and building up of worn parts are to be seen on the stand of Metallisation, Ltd., Dudley, Worcester. This method

of reconditioning is being used by concerns engaged in overhauling road vehicles. It covers a wide field, and a 'variety of metals is employed.

An up-to-date method of securing studs, pins, nuts, bolts, etc., to sheet metal is demonstrated by Messrs. CycArc Stud Welding, 27-29, New North Road, London. Times taken during the demonstration proved that a a-in. stud could be welded in 0.2 sec. and a 1-in. stud in 0.5 sec. This method of locating nuts and studs should find an opening in the coachbuilding sphere, especially for securing panels.

Richard Crittal and Co., Ltd., 156, Great Portland Street, London, is exhibiting a range of Heather air filters for use on transport vehicles, The maker claims maximum efficiency with a minimum resistance to air flow, and an additional feature is reduction of the noise of air flow.

A variety of portable electric drills, with some sectioned models, is featured by S. Wolf and Co., Ltd., Pioneer Works, Hanger Lane, London. Amongst the models shown are drills up to 1-in. capacity, screwdrivers, sanders, chisel mortisers, flexible shafts and handgrinders.

Silentbloc, Ltd., of Ladbroke Road, Notting Hill Gate, London, is showing a variety of anti-vibration body mountings which are steadily gaining favour with the manufacturers. Silentbloc bushes for springs and other such purposes are shown in sizes from I-in, bore up to several inches, Sinamonds Aeroctssories, Ltd., of Treforest, near Pontypridd, Glamorgan, is exhibiting the Simmonds elastic stopnuts and Pinnacle nuts, the latter withstanding temperatures of 500 degrees C. under any conditions. The Pinnacle metal diaphragm nut is now gaining favour for use on engine connecting rods. Fram filters, shown on the same stand, are exhibited in various sizes and as sectional models.

Demonstrations of the "Dag" range of colloidal graphites in oil, water and other liquids are staged by Acheson Colloids, Ltd., 9, Gayfare Street, Westminster, London. Examples of the use of " Dag " products include assembly, lubrication, and running-in of mechanical equipment, metal-working operaions, screening and conducting coatings

a30 on electrical apparatus, and thin graphite films on glass, rubber, plastics and metals.

A six-cylindered injection pump manufactured by Bryce Fuel Injection, Ltd., Lagonda Works, Staines, is on view in Section 13 of the Grand Hall Gallery. This newly designed pump has a hydraulic governor which is claimed to give an accurate and sensitive control throughout the whole speed range.

The Motor Industry Research Association, Great West Road, Brentford, is demonstrating a capacity-type electrical torquemeter, which is set up on a shaft to show the method of operation.

Battery-operated trucks for use in workshops are shown by Ransontes, Sims and 3effries, Ltd., Orwell Works, Ipswich. The models shown include two types of 2-ton capacity, four-wheelsteering elevating platform truck, a 2-ton two-wheel-steering fixed platform truck, and a tractor of 30-cwt. hauling capacity.

Wellworthy Piston Rings, Ltd., LYmington, Hants, is showing pistons and rings for cylinder bores of all sizes. Among the smaller sizes of pistons are to be found cut-away models of the pottype and toroidal pikons, as used in high-speed oil engines.
