WE learn that the board of Lagonda, IN Ltd., has reached an agreement to sell the Staines factory to a group headed by Mr. Alan P. Good. Mr." Good's group will use the factory primarily for the manufacture of a new range of oil engines.

Associated British Engineering, Ltd, of which Mr. Alan Good is chairman, controls the oil-engine manufacturing companies of Mirrlees, Bickerton and Day, Ltd., Stockport, and J. and H. McLaren, Ltd., Leeds. Through its connection with the Brush Electrical Engineering Co., Ltd., it is also interested in Petters, Ltd., Loughborough, and Cub Oil Engines, Ltd., Wishaw. The whole range of oil engines manufactured by these companies is marketed by Associated British Oil Engines, Ltd., Duke's Court, 32, Duke Street, London, S.W.1. Associated British Engineering, Ltd. also recently acquired the goodwill of the oil-engine section of John Fowler and Co. (Leeds), Ltd., as has been reported earlier.

AWARDS FOR ESSAYS ON BODYWORK

THE council of the Institute of British Carriage and Automobile Manufacturers, 50, Pall Mall, London, S.W.I, has announced the results of the Maythorn Essay Competition, 1947. Competitors were invited to submit essays on "The influence of war-time processes, technical development and materials in the design, construction, and manufacture of post-war bodies."

Each essay was submitted under a nom de plume, and the awards are:— (1) " lronside "—A. J. Connell, 144, Barker's Butts Lane, Coventry; (2) "Body Engineer "—H. C. Haddock, 13, Grenville Avenue, Coventry; (3) "Post Chaise "—James Scott, 10, Haig Avenue, Stirlina, Scotland; highly commended, "Chariot "—C. E. S. Lane, 36, Farley Road, Selsdon, Surrey.

ANOTHER BOOKLET ON THE ACT A BOOKLET on the Transport Act rA as it affects road transport is being issued by Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd., Adderley Park, Birmingham, 8, at is. 6d., plus postage. It is written by Mr. G. W. Quick Smith, LL.B.;

M.Inst.T., secretary of the N.R.T.F. In view of the huge scope of the Act, Mr. Quick Smith, in his foreword, apologizes in advance for "inevitable errors and omissions."

EVENING CLASSES FOR ROAD. TRANSPORT

VENNG classes to prepare students for the examinations of the Institute of Transport at the graduateship and associateship stages, also in road transport operation, finance and engineering under the scheme of the National Standing Joint ammittee on Road Transport Education, will be held at the City of London College, Moorgate, London, E.C.2. Lectures will be given weekly, and enrolment should be made on September 15-27. from 5 p.m., each evening. The session commences on Monday, September 22.
