the most highly efficient organizations, and in the gas industry they are apt to occur after the normal working day. When one of these emergencies arises it invariably 'calls for prompt action.

To meet emergencies that may arise after the normal working day, the Sheffield and District Gas Co. has designed a new night emergency van that embodies some unique features.

It was decided that a sturdy vehicle would be necessary to convey the staff and the large assortment of tools and equipment needed for the different jobs, and for this reason a Bedford 27 h.p. tipper has been converted.

The vehicle was completely overhauled in the company's own repair shops, and the body was designed to the specification of the transport and

mechanical superintendent. It is of metal construction, and seats have been provided inside. Good interior lighting is installed, and the roomy, interior—. 8 ft: 11 ins,, long, 4 ft; g ins. wide, and • 4 ft. 7 ins, high—provides ample space for carrying all essential equipment, such as picks, shovels, and even a watchman's hut. A connection has also been fitted for towing compressors oi other trailers.

The original unladen weight of the vehicle was 1 ton 19 cwt. 2 qrs., and after conversion the weight is 2 tons 3 cwt. The colour scheme conforms to the standard scheme of the Sheffield and District Gas Co.'s latest vehicles.
