Redundancies at two Wincanton depots could affect drivers and packing staff as talks continue. Bridget Carter reports.

UP TO 500 JOBS will be axed at Wincanton's two Northampton depots by the end of the year and 80 drivers will he among the victims, according to the USDAW union.

As CM went to press Wincanton would only say that it's too early in the consultation process to predict which jobs will be lost.

The move to cut staff at the two depots in SwanValley,Northampton comes as a result of the supermarket chain Morrisons restructuring its distribution services in the aftermath of the acquisition of the Safeway supermarkets stores Consultation surrounding the Northampton depots began in August and the restructuring of the two depots is expected to be completed by Christmas. • Wincanton has won a new fiveyear £900m contract with its existing customer Somerfield.

The logistics giant already manages nine sites for the supermarket chain, but now Somerfield is transferring its transport operation at Lea Green and the warehouse operations at Cardinal and Huntingdon to Wincanton's care. Wincanton says it will be taking on the 1,500 workers who were previously working for the thirdparty supplier at the three sites; no redundancies are anticipated.
