WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS on LGVs came into force in King's Lynn. Norfolk last week.They are designed to stop trucks using the port town as a short cut, but local hauliers say the only LGVs that drive into King's Lynn are there to make deliveries.
Norfolk County Council's senior engineer, Andy Freedland, says existing weight restrictions in the town didn't stop trucks running north to south. He claims the council received SO many complaints from residents about truck traffic and LGVs getting lost in the town centre that it was forced to act.
Point restrictions" were introduced on 29 September to prevent vehicles of 7.5 tonnes and above using local roads as short cuts. Freedland says the council consulted with the Road Haulage Association and the Freight Transport Association, as well as operators and businesses in King's Lynn; he describes the response as "generally supportive".
But Paddy Green, for King's Lynn-based GBTransport,says she isn't aware of trucks using the town as a short cut: "It's silly. They wouldn't drive through because there's no short route.
"You can't blame the drivers, because nothing is signposted. The signs are dreadful."
Trucks delivering A into the town will not be affected by the new weight restrictions.
