Of 174 vehicles stopped,91 were issued with immediate prohibitions a figure which Brunstrom admits is "hardto believe".

Rather than using official channels Brunstrom reported the results on his internet blog, in which he says offenders deserve tougher penalties.

Offences ranged from 42 mechanical defects (80% involving brakes), to overloading, fiddling tachographs and hours violations, Nine drivers were arrested at the roadside and two drivers. one Irish and one Polish, have already been to court and fined E250 apiece.

Brunstrom says:"I don't believe a multi-million-pound international haulage business will behave better because of a £250 fine."

The number of foreign drivers using the Holyhead ferry is now so significant that the Welsh police were joined by two Polish police officers for the roadside checks.

The Holyhead check was part of Operation Mermaid, which takes place all over the country. The full results of the latest nationwide check will be released byVosa later this month.
