Declining turnover among road transport operators is hitting the UK service sector, according to government figures. David Harris reports.

FALLING TURNOVER among road transport operators has driven a drop in the output of the UK's entire service sector, according to latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS makes monthly measurements by looking at the turnover of a statistically significant number of companies; an ONS spokesman suggests freight transport was one of the main reasons for a 1.6% drop between June and July in "transport, storage and communications" firms.

This is the largest such fall since June 2002 and is not a result of seasonal factors as these are built into the calculation.

The spokesman admits: -We aren't certain of a specific reason, but it does appear to be mirrored by a fall in the business of wholesalers, which would account for fewer goods for hauliers to carry."

The drop in the turnover of road hauliers helps explain a 0.3% fall in the turnover of the UK service sector as a whole. That figure would have been worse but for a 1.4% rise in the turnover in the -business services and finance" category.
