Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Receivers Coopers & Lybrand are waiting to hear how much they raised from a truck auction after the liquidation of one of Britain's oldest haulage firms last week. C&L was forced to liquidate the assets of the 65-year-old Kent-based A&H Woodcock, despite weeks of negotiations with a possible saviour following Woodcock's sudden descent into receivership two months ago (CM 13-17 Sept). "Some trucks were said to local hauliers," Coopers' spokesman Roger White says. "We're waiting to hear from the agents what was raised." All Woodcock's 33 staff have been made redundant except one who is left tending the remaining trucks and equipment at the Firm's site near Ashford.

"They just didn't have ongoing business to make it to viable proposition for the buyer," White says, adding that of several possible buyers, only one showed serious intent.

The sale of Woodcock as a going concern was also hindered by its 1.9-acre site which was too far away from the nearest motorways. The company's remaining assets are expected to be sold in the next few weeks.
