WHEN South Shields Corporation were VV granted permission by the Northern raffle Commissioners to raise their bus fares, the chairman, Mr. J. A. l. Hanlon, said he wondered whether the increases were enough. The transport department, be commented, was working on so fine a margin that if there were a further rise in costs, the same position would arise again. It was stated that the department's expenditure had increased by nearly £11,000 as a result of wage increases, while during the past year 1,760,000 fewer passengers had been carried. The last fare increase was introduced in August. 1961.
